COLLOQUIUM ON ME/CFS BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH
Monday, July 3rd 2006 Glasgow Caledonian University

This colloquium, the first ever on ME/CFS Biomedical Research in the UK was hosted

by Dr Lorna Paul, Lecturer in Physiotherapy at Glasgow  Caledonian University and

HealthQWest Research Fellow, and was organised and sponsored by ME Research UK (MERGE), which commissions and funds biomedical research, and the Irish ME Trust

which represents ME/CFS patients in the Republic of Ireland

The aim was to bring together Professionals working towards the common goal of

understanding the biomedical basis of this illness, and to raise awareness of the need for

biomedical investigation. Speakers consisted of key scientific experts in the field, and the

day was particularly aimed at scientific and healthcare professionals with a working

interest in ME/CFS.

After the scientific presentations, an afternoon workshop was held on

Physiotherapeutic Aspects of ME/CFS by Dr Lorna Paul and Dr Jo Nijs

(an ME/CFS expert from Vrije Universiteit Brussels, Belgium).

A professional report consisting of key overview summaries of the presentations will be

produced by ME Research UK for subsequent distribution to GPs, stakeholders, healthcare professionals and patients.

A report to the Chief Medical Officer in 2002 said that a programme of research on all

aspects of ME/CFS was urgently needed, and that improvement of health and social care was an urgent challenge.

Sixty Scientists and healthcare professionals attended and it is hoped to hold a larger event next year
